Kronecker

The Kronecker Lineage

Robert Hjalmar Mellin (1854-1933) - see Street - received post-doctoral mentoring from...

Leopold Kronecker (1823-1891), Dissertation: De unitatibus complexis (1845), Universität Berlin.

    Kronecker's dissertation was supervised by…

Gustav Peter Lejeune Dirichlet (1805-1859), Dissertation: Partial Results on Fermat's Last Theorem, Exponent 5 (Honorary, 1827) Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.  Dirichlet presented an early verison of his dissertation at the French Academy of Sciences in Paris in 1825. Dirichlet's ancestors are arguable. It's clear he didn't have a single supervisor and didn't actually study at Bonn.  I haven't been able to find good sources explaining his connections with Fourier and Poisson - who are generally described as his mentors during his time in Paris.  Apparently, Dirichlet's Latin was so bad that he couldn't adequately defend his dissertation.  They gave him an honorary Ph.D anyway.

Dirichlet's important influences are believed to have been Simeon Denis Poisson and ...

Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768 - 1830), Dissertation or degree unknown (likely none due to French Revolution). Studied at École Normale Supérieure in 1794, and was lecturing at École Polytechnique by 1795.

Fourier attended lectures in 1794 at École Normale Supérieure given by...

Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), No dissertation. B.A. at Università di Torino (1754) then self-taught. Lectured at at in 1794, where he also taught Pierre-Simon Laplace, in the Poisson Lineage.

Lagrange's early mathematics letters were answered and circulated by...

Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783), Dissertation: Dissertatio physica de sono (1726) Universität Basel.

    Euler's dissertation was supervised by…

Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748), Dissertations: Dissertatio de effervescentia et fermentatione (1690); Dissertatio Inauguralis Physico-Anatomica de Motu Musculorum (1694), Medicinae Dr.,Universität Basel.

Johann's mathematical work was initially mentored by his older brother, Jacob (see Bernoulli Lineage). His medical dissertation was supervised by…

Nikolaus Eglinger (Nicolaus Eglingerus) (1645-1711) Dissertation: Disputatio medica in universam physiologiam;  Disputatio Medica Inauguralis De Angina (1661);  Medicinae Dr., Universität Basel.

     Eglinger dissertation was supervised by...

Johann Casparus Bauhin
