Research Description

In situ capping is a successful remediation technique used to isolate contaminated sediments in lake beds from the environment.  However, if the lake sediments are too soft, all of the benefits of a cap may be negated due to contaminants moving from the sediment into the cap and the overlying water column.  The purpose of my research is to investigate the use of anisotropic consolidation tests to determine if contaminant mobilization occurs in very soft contaminated sediments due to consolidation induced by the added pressure of an in situ cap.
