Once we know how much uranium deposited on the ground, we can back-calculate the amount of uranium that had to be released to give this amount of deposition. Of course the uncertainties are large, but it is important to note that, as shown here, the range encompasses the source term we estimated for uranium released from the stacks. This dual calculation of the source term, using completely independent sets of data give us confidence that the amount we estimate to have been released is close to the actual amount released.
