Ying Xu, Assistant Professor in Architectural Engineering, is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. The title of her project is "Emission and Transport of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Indoor Environments." PBDEs are used extensively in the U.S. as flame retardants in consumer products and building materials. The goal of this research is to understand the fundamental mechanisms governing emission and transport of PBDEs.

Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards from the National Science Foundation recognize promising young faculty and supports their research with five years of funding.

Dr. Xu earned her doctorate from Virginia Tech before joining the university faculty in 2009.
