Joe Malina Selected as Engineer of the Year by Travis Chapter of TSPE

Joe Malina was selected as Engineer of the Year by the Travis Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE). He will receive the award during Engineer's Week.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Joe earned a BCE at Manhattan College in 1957, and MSCE in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1961 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1961, he joined the Civil Engineering faculty at The University of Texas at Austin and has dedicated more than 50 years teaching, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. He has presented short courses on wastewater and sludge treatment in the US and overseas and has published numerous technical and professional papers.

He is a Life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association, Water Environment Association, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and National Society of Professional Engineers. He is a Founding member of the ASCE Environmental and Water Resources Institute, and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineering, He is a licensed professional engineer in Texas and a member of the TSPE and the NSPE.

His professional contributions have recognized by numerous awards, e.g. Gordon Maskew Fair Award for Achievements, Leadership and Contributions to the Total Environmental Effort 1984, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, Arthur Sidney Bedell Award for Extraordinary Personal Service in the Water Pollution Control Field, 1985, Texas Water Pollution Control Association and Water Pollution Control Federation, Joe J. King Professional Achievement Award in Recognition of Exemplary Service and Demonstrated Leadership in Advancing the Profession of Engineering, 1988, College of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, Gordon Maskew Fair Award for Worthy Accomplishments in the Training and Development of Future Engineers,1994, Water Environment Federation, Arthur M. Wellington Prize for 2000 best paper on transportation, American Society of Civil Engineers, Outstanding Civil Engineer Award 2005, Austin Branch, ASCE, Lifetime Achievement Award, 2006, Water Environment Association of Texas, and TSPE 2012 Engineering of the Year Award, Travis Chapter. He also is the recipient of the 2012 AAEE Edward J. Cleary Award for outstanding performance in the management of environmental protection enterprises conducted under either public or private auspices.

He and Ida Klein Malina have been married for 47 years and they have 5 children and 8 grandchildren.
