Dr. Robert Gilbert, professor of geotechnical engineering, received the 2011 Norman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers for a paper co-authored with UT alumnus Dr. Shadi Najjar. They were recognized for their paper, “Importance of Lower-Bound Capacities in the Design of Deep Foundations.”
The Norman Medal is ASCE's highest award for technical papers, and recognizes a paper that makes a definitive contribution to engineering. Gilbert and Najjar's paper contributed to engineering science by introducing, for the first time, the lower-bound capacity as a parameter that could optimize the design of a deep foundation and increase its reliability.
Dr. Najjar received his PhD from the department in 2005 under the supervision of Dr. Gilbert, and is currently an Assistant Professor at the American University of Beirut. The professors will receive their award at the ASCE Annual Conference to be held in Memphis, Tennessee in October 2011.
