The Board of Regents of the University of Texas System recently recognized CAEE professor Michael D. Engelhardt for outstanding teaching. The Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize faculty members from across the UT System who have demonstrated a clear commitment to teaching, extraordinary classroom performance, and innovative course development at the undergraduate level.

Engelhardt joined the faculty at UT CAEE in 1989 and teaches courses related to structural steel design. He also teaches CE 301, Civil Engineering Systems. His classes are highly rated by both undergraduate and graduate students, as he provides intellectual challenges while also instilling confidence. He keeps his lectures entertaining and is widely known for his wonderful sense of humor. Students often change their course schedules to be able to enroll in one of his classes. No other CAEE faculty member matches his record in terms of consistently high scores on the course-instructor surveys. Representative samples of the anonymous student comments are:

“Excellent professor! Enthusiastic about civil engineering and really geared my interests in the field.”

“I would say the BEST professor and person I have had the opportunity to know here at the University of Texas at Austin.”

“You are an amazing professor. Thanks for making the class entertaining.”

“Although the course was very challenging, I felt like I learned a great deal. Engelhardt really cares about making sure his students are learning.”

“This was a great course. I enjoyed it more, learned more, and sweat blood more than any other course I’ve had in civil engineering.”

"I would take basket weaving if Engelhardt taught it."

Engelhardt is also recognized as a world-class researcher in the area of seismic design of steel buildings and is considered a leader within the structural engineering community. Engelhardt serves on the Specification Committee and the Seismic Specifications Committee within the American Institute of Steel Construction – the committees that develop design provisions for structural steel buildings. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Steel Structures and serves on the editorial board for Steel and Composite Structures – An International Journal.
